Parasitology

Dr. Moorhead's Parasitology CE event is Silver sponsored by

Topic: Parasitology

In this session, we will cover both prevention and treatment of heartworm and the major intestinal helminth: hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms. We will discuss biology, diagnostics and treatment of canine and feline heartworm. For the intestinal parasites, we will discuss life cycles and the important stages for diagnosis and treatment. We will also emphasize prevention. Finally, we will discuss emerging lack of efficacy cases and what we know to date about diagnosis and management of these difficult cases.

Heartworm Prevention, Treatment, and Diagnostics.

In practice, we frequently encounter patients at risk for parasitic infections, making it important for veterinary teams to understand both prevention and treatment strategies. In this portion of the session, we will discuss the biology, diagnostics, and treatment of heartworm infection caused by Dirofilaria immitis in both dogs and cats. Diagnostic approaches and treatment considerations will be reviewed, along with strategies for preventing heartworm infection in companion animals. Finally, we will discuss emerging reports of lack of efficacy in heartworm prevention products and review what is currently known about diagnosing and managing these challenging cases.

Major Intestinal Helminth

Intestinal parasites are commonly encountered in both dogs and cats in clinical practice, making it important for veterinary teams to understand how these infections occur and how they are identified and managed. In this portion of the session, we will review the major intestinal helminths, including Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworms), Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati (roundworms), Trichuris vulpis (whipworms), and Dipylidium caninum (tapeworms). We will discuss the life cycles of these parasites and highlight the stages that are most important for diagnosis and treatment. Emphasis will also be placed on prevention strategies that help reduce infection risk in canine and feline patients.
