Clinical Gastroenterology of Dogs & Cats

Dr. Todd Tams will be discussing topics in clinical gastroenterology of dogs and cats, with an emphasis on a practical approach to diagnosis and management of patients with vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation (cats).  Topics will include newer approaches to patients with acute and chronic diarrhea (both diagnostic testing capabilities and management principles), gastric hypomotility in dogs (underdiagnosed), GERD, IBD and small intestinal lymphoma in cats, recommendations on use of probiotics, and where endoscopy fits in evaluating dogs and cats with GI disorders.  Many case examples will be presented.

Todd R. Tams, DVM, DACVIM

Dr. Tams received his DVM from The Ohio State University in 1977 and was in mixed general practice for a year prior to entering an internship program in Los Angeles.  After interning at the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group, he completed a residency in internal medicine at Colorado State University.  Dr. Tams was a staff internist at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston from 1981-84, and achieved board certification in internal medicine in 1982.  Dr. Tams returned to Los Angeles in 1984.  In January 1987 West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group became the first VCA (Veterinary Centers of America) hospital. For more than 30 years he served as Chief Medical Officer for VCA, as well as being on staff as a part-time internist at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. VCA owns and operates over 1,000 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. In 2020 Dr. Tams served as acting CMO for VCA while also transitioning to his new role as Mars Veterinary Health CMO for External Affairs. In his new role he remains based at VCA in Los Angeles.

Dr. Tams was named as a Distinguished Alumnus of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000.

Dr. Tams has published two textbooks:

  1. Small Animal Endoscopy (Mosby/Elsevier), second edition published November 1998, and a third edition in 2011.
  2. Handbook of Small Animal Gastroenterology (Elsevier).

Dr. Tams has presented numerous seminars and wet lab courses in the U.S. and abroad on his special interest areas of gastroenterology and GI endoscopy.
